Sure, reusable grocery bags
are durable and eco-friendly.
The downside is that many
harbor nasty microbes capable
of cross-contaminating newly
purchased foods. In a study
funded by the American
Chemistry Council, researchers
intercepted shoppers as they
entered supermarkets,
collecting 84 empty reusable
bags (most made from woven
polypropylene). Nearly all bags
were found to have some level
of bacterial growth, with 12
percent testing positive for £
coli.
The good news: Washing
tainted bags with laundry
detergent, then allowing them
to air-dry, reduced bacteria
counts to nondetectable levels.
Another smart move: Dedicate
separate bags to raw meat and
produce, just as you do with
cutting boards in the kitchen.
